What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional radiologists are trained specialist in both diagnostic radiology and interventional therapy. Interventional radiology (IR) is a medical specialty that uses imaging modalities, such as fluoroscopy (live X-ray), CT, ultrasound, or MRI, to offer minimally invasive procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of medical conditions.

These live images are used to guide the placement of small instruments, such as catheters or wires, through the skin and into the body to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system.

Advantages of
interventional radiology

By utilising precise imaging guidance, IR procedures are less invasive and have a reduced risk profile compared to most traditional surgical procedures. These procedures can often be done on an outpatient basis, meaning patients can often go home the same day. This innovative field enhances patient comfort and safety, making it a preferred option for various medical conditions
